BELLY FAT - YOUR SELF STRAPPED TIME BOMB IN THE WAIST

Oh, You just thought it was only the Alcohol which taint your Liver functioning and corrosion. Just give it a thought!.  You could be terribly wrong.  Anyone with excess weight in their belly is also in the firing line.
Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is a medical term for excessive fat deposits in your liver. The flip side is most sufferers are oblivious to the fact that they have this condition (NAFLD), leave it unchecked. Its a real killer, worse than alcohol intake. Its undoubtedly a killer one as most worryingly, those developing NAFLD are getting younger and younger.

Reasons for Fat deposit:

Abdominal fat , aka, visceral fat(the fat deposits within the abdominal and around important internal organs such as the liver) seems to be the main trigger. "Fat builds in the liver and is carried out into the blood stream. This extra fat in the blood irritates blood vessels and this raised blood pressure and the risk of cardiac arrest, according to Dr Stephen Ryder , Medical Advisor to the British Liver Trust.

The Indications

NAFLD  is largely harmless when it appears initially, but gradually,  it can cause inflammation and ultimately give  Cirrhosis of the liver.  NAFLD does not send indicators at Stage 1 as per Dr Ryder.
At Stage 2, he says "some people may experience discomfort in the liver area (on the right, under the ribs) and tiredness. It is a fact that if people with NAFLD go out to develop fibrosis and cirrhosis, it may be many years before symptoms surface.  These include jaundice (yellowness of eyes and skin) dark yellowish urine, ascites (an abnormal build-up of fluid in the lower abdomen that causes swelling), vomiting blood and black, tarry stools.

The cure

There is no specific drug treatment for NAFLD yet, although this is now an area of intense research, says Dr Ryder. But if noticed in initial stages, NAFLD can be reversed by changing your diet, losing weight and indulging in more exercises.  NAFLD is not caused by eating too much saturated fat.  It is caused just by being overweight.  It is a relief to note that losing 5 to 10 of body weight can be an enough cause to ward off NAFLD, It is also vital to do various brisk exercises. There is enough evidence that this can improve insulin resistance.

Here are seven steps to protect your liver.

1. Attack your Weight by reducing it rapidly

Over 95 percent of NAFLD patients are overweight or obese.  Such patients have levels of circulating fat which is being stored not only in skin but also in other organs including liver. Fat causes inflammation and in turn stimulates scarring of the liver. So if one lose weight, just 10 percent of the body weight is quite enough to reverse liver scarring.

2. A Coffee break would do good

Drinking two or more cups of coffee a day has been found to protect against liver cancer and cirrhosis in a research conducted by the University of Edinburgh - if it is taken as part of a healthy well-balanced diet.  While it is not a good news for alcohol lovers, that NAFLD resulted in alcohol consumption cannot be subdued by coffee breaks.

3. Caution on Fructose

Excessive consumption of fructose (fruit sugar) found in fizzy drinks and fruit juices has been linked to an increased risk of NAFLD. One paper published in 2015 in Turkey Vakif University said fructose was more likely to contribute to NAFLD than a high fat diet. Research revealed that fructose has been a major stimulant for a process called denovo lipogenesis, which converts excess carbohydrates into fatty acids.

4. Minimise Diabetes risk

An estimated 70 percent of people with Type 2 Diabetes are reported to have NAFLD. In this type, glucose metabolism and fat metabolism are affected with excess fat stored in the liver.  Losing weight is a primary requisite for such cases  as losing weight may put diabetes into remission and also reverse NAFLD considerably.

5. Keeping Fit

Exercise improves insulin resistance, a risk factor for NAFLD. Research by the University of Newcastle has found that exercise alone without weight loss can reverse the disease.  In the later stage disease, both exercise and weight loss are certainly needed for the damage to be reversed.

6. Be particular that you eat a Healthy diet

A Resarch article  published in the Journal of Hepatology , found that obese people who take food rich in olive oil, pulses, walnuts, vegetables and a little amount of red meat had a significantly greater reduction in liver fats.

7.  Ensure safe drinking limits

Alcohol does not cause NAFLD directly, but it can act as a catalyst to other forms of liver disease that can result in fibrosis and cirrhosis, so drink not more  than 14 units a week
