It is a fact that considerable percent of men and women in the sub-continent on the age group of 35 to 55 apply Hairdye to their hair to cover shades of grey, mainly due to premature grey or natural greying, the reason being sedentary life style we adapt in the recent years and unhealthy food practices adopted by us.
Nevertheless, hair dye is here to stay.
A sizeable portion of people get their hair dyed in Salons, Parlors etc., Rest they get it done by themselves in the comfort of their homes and suiting to their time.
However, hair dye, can leave an unwanted mark on your scalp or skin or nails, inspite of wearing gloves and cautions application of dye.
There are some hacks and techniques that can easen your agony of removing hair dye stains spilled in your body, whether scalp, head, fingers, nails, hand, legs, etc.,
Effective removal of hair dye from hairline.
Dying hair is always a messy job and staining along the hairline during the process is quite common. Please note that your facial skin is sensitive, so one should be careful and avoiding harsh chemicals to remove hair dye stains from the face and hairline.
There is no proven medical or scientific research to support the use of these methods (shown as below) for hair dye removal from the skin / scalp.
The following methods are only indicative and practically to be followed:-
1. Wet face with warm water
2. Use face / bath soap or facial cleanser, rub into the hands for a thick lather / foam.
3. Gently rub the lathered or foam soap onto the stained area.
4. Rinse face with warm water and use dry towel to wipe.
5. If the stain does not budge after 2 or 3 such washes, we can suggest other method.
Make-up Remover
1. Apply Make-up remover to a cotton and gently rub the stain with the cotton ball.
2. Leave the Make-up remover on the face or affected area for 5 minutes.
3. Rinse with warm water and wipe with a dty cloth or towel.
4. Otherwise, use a make-up wipe to rub the stain gently away.
Baby Oil and/ or Olive Oil
A safer and gentle way to get rid of hair dye is to apply Baby oil. People can very safely use Baby Oil on the face, although they should avoid getting it in their eyes, as it will irritate.
Olive Oil is another solution. According to researchers, Olive Oil has stain-removing properties.
1. Use fingers to apply enough oil to cover the stain, but not that much so that it drips down the face.
2. Let the oil sit on the stain for atleast 8 hours or slightly more depending on the thickness of the stain.
3. If leaving it overnight, wrap the area in clean cotton cloth or bandages to prevent the oil from staining any sheets or pillows.
4. Rinse off with warm water and soap or a mild shampoo and wipe off with a dry towel.
Tooth Paste
Tooth paste contain mild abrasives, such as baking soda to help remove stains from teeth normally. However, please note that there is no proven research that baking powder can remove hair dye stains.
1. Using a non-gel tooth paste that contain baking soda, dab a pea-sized amount onto the hair dye stain using a cotton swab or fingers.
2. Gently massage into the stain for at least 30 seconds.
3. Leave for 5 to 15 minutes, then remove the tooth paste using a damp wash cloth.
Hair spray
Hair spray can help remove hair dye from the hairline. However, hairspray is not suitable to apply on all skin types to get rid of excess hair dye stains. So exercise caution. Do not spray directly onto the stain as it may get into the eyes.
1. Spray hair spray onto a cotton ball or pad.
2. Dab the pad lightly against the stained area
3. If one feels irritation, stop immediately and rinse the applied area with warm water.
Removing stains elsewhere on the body
People can use many of the same methods to remove hair dye from other parts of the body. However, there are some additional techniques that a person can choose from to use on areas of skin that are not as sensitive as the face.
However, there is no evidence to support the use of these techniques on hair dye stains.
Dish soap and baking soda
Baking soda is a mild abrasive and can exfoliate skin cells stained with hair dye. Dish soap can help to dissolve the hair dye. Both together, these chemicals can remove hair dye from the skin.
1. Combine equal parts of gentle dish soap and baking soda
2. Use hands or cotton pad to apply to the stained area
3. Scrub the area gently in a circular motion
4. After scrubbing for few minutes, rinse the skin with warm water to remove all the paste
5. Repeat once or twice, if necessary
6. If one finds any discomfort or irritation during the above process, please stop immediately and rinse the affected area with water (without any delay).
Rubbing Alcohol
Rubbing alcohol can help remove hair due stains from skin. However, caution is essential, as rubbing alcohol can be harsh and drying of the skin.
1. Combine a small amount of rubbing alcohol and liquid hand soap onto a cotton ball.
2. Gently rub the solution onto the stained area
3. Rinse the area thoroughly with warm water and soap.

There is presently no scientific evidence to support these methods as methods to remove hair dye from nails.
Nail Polish Remover
Nail polish remover can remove hair dye from hands and nails. However, prolonged exposure of nail polish remover to the skin can cause discomfort and/or burning sensation especially to sensitive skin.
1. Soak a cotton ball with nail polish remover
2, Dab the skin on the hands with cotton ball and pause for a moment to make sure that there is no adverse reaction on your skin or scalp or anywhere in the body,
3. If it is cleared, rub the nails or hands with the soaked cotton ball in a circular motion.
4. After 30 seconds, rinse hands throroughly with soap and water.
Lava Soap
Lava soap or otherwise known as Heavy duty hand soaps, such as Lava soaps are designed to remove stubborn stains from the hands.
1. Lather soap in hands
2. Scrub hair dye stains thoroughly
3. Rinse hands with warm water
Tips to prevent staining of Hair dye in the body
1, Ensuring methods to avoid hair dye coming into contact with skin can avoid the need for stain removal methods.
2. Use baby oil, coconut oil or petroleum jelly along the hairline and ears to act as a barrier against the hair dye.
3. Avoid showering before dying the hair to build up natural, protective oils in the skin.
4. Use an old towel around the neck to prevent drips from staining the skin.
